It is true that there is a relation between a condition and the conditional, but things are slightly more difficult than that.
First, as in several other languages, within a sentence, the clause that is in the conditional is not the clause that expresses the condition.

Then, the conditional is not used only to say what you would do if you were rich.
At last, not all the if (si) clauses -even conjugated in the imperfect of the indicative- go hand in hand with a clause in the conditional:
"J'ai plus de souvenirs que si j'avais mille ans" Ch. Baudelaire.
