There are as many people who like to give orders as
few people who like to obey them.
The imperative mood uses only 3 persons: tu, nous, vous.
All -er verbs make the imperative by dropping the pronoun before the verb
conjugated in the present.
The "tu" person is written without the final "s".
Rester: reste, restons, restez.
There are 2 basic patterns: either the verb is alone,
or the verb comes with a complement.
Each structure can be affirmative or negative.
| Verb | Complement |
| Tiens! | |
| Ne venez pas! | |
| Dis | la vérité! |
| N'achetons pas | les tomates! |
An indirect object that is fully expressed has to be added at the end of the sentence:
| Verb | Direct object article+noun |
Indirect object preposition+article+noun |
| Ne viens pas | chez Mamie! | |
| Achète | les tomates | au (= à le) supermarché! |
But when the indirect object is replaced with a pronoun, it comes before the other complement(s):
| Verb | Pronoun | an object | another object |
| Dis- | moi | la vérité! | |
| Achète- | leur | du chocolat | au supermarché! |
