French Relative Pronouns: Que Dont Où

Que, Dont and Où are invariable.

Que is used when the antecedent (the noun or the pronoun that comes before it) is the real object of the verb.
L'arrosoir que Mamie porte est très lourd.
Though l'arrosoir is the subject of est (it is the watering can that is heavy), it is the object of porte (What is Mamie carrying? The watering can.)

The "e" of que drops before a vowel:
Le bateauqu'on voit passer est un catamaran.
La fille qu'il invite au cinéma n'aime pas les films d'horreur.

Où is used when the antecedent is a location:
L'hotel où je vais en vacances est un 3 étoiles.
It may be used with an antecedent that expresses time: A l'heure où je parle, il y a des enfants qui ne sont pas au lit.

Dont indicates possession:
L'homme dont la femme s'appelle Lea est mon grand-père.

Dont is also used when the verb asks for the preposition de:
avoir peur de, avoir envie de, parler de, se moquer de, se souvenir de etc.
Le chien dont j'ai peur est énorme.
