French Vocabulary in use - 1
Words must be looked for and learnt.
Translations, synonyms and stems are given in the infinitive for verbs,
in masculine singular form for nouns and adjectives.
Et toi, comment tu t'appelles?
On se fait la bise1?
On s'appelle. On se téléphone.

- Je vais2 bien, merci.

- la bise: friendly kiss. Se faire la bise: to give somebody a kiss.
- Conjugation of Aller (to go), irregular verb,
often used as a semi-auxiliary.

ils vont - ça: demonstrative pronoun. It can replace any subject except people;
this exception is more social than grammatical: to use ça
for people sounds very impolite and despising.
Comment ça va? is the casual way to ask: Comment vous portez-vous?

- In English, if you rent a flat, you'd rather precise if you pay or are paid. It's the same in French: some verbs are ambiguous and the use of the proper pronoun helps to decide which meaning they carry.
