I took these pictures when I was living in Versailles.
Alas, these are all what remains of the hahas, since they were filled in for security reasons... or so it was said.

A "haha" is a ditch meant to prevent animals (and angry people as well) from accessing the house without ruining the scenery as railings would do.
Often (it's not the case here) the side of the ditch that is nearest the manor is higher than the other so that the meadow looks in one part when seen from the manor.
The pictures below show the haha "as if" you were walking towards it.
Un "haha" est un fossé destiné à empêcher les animaux (ainsi que le peuple en colère) d'accéder à la maison sans ruiner le décor comme le feraient des grilles.
Souvent (ce n'est pas le cas ici) le côté du fossé qui est le plus près du manoir est plus haut que l'autre afin que la prairie semble être d'un seul tenant quand on la voit du manoir.
